We know great surprises are waiting for us and in any case we can take a break and admire the panoramic glimpses along our way.<br \/>\nAfter a <strong>15-minutes of sustained climbing<\/strong> we meet a deviation which leads to the <strong>Church of San Lorenzo<\/strong>: it is a simple stone church standing on a grassy space, surrounded by lush greenery overlooking the wonderful view of the Baia dei Saraceni (Saracens\u2019 Bay) and Punta Crena.<br \/>\nWe let our eyes wander over the sea and shortly afterwards we start hiking again.<\/p>\n<div class=\"spazio30\"><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1619 aligncenter img-responsive\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.residenceliguria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Chiesa-San-Lorenzo.jpg\" alt=\"The panoramic church of S.Lorenzo - trekking in Varigotti\" width=\"785\" height=\"408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.residenceliguria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Chiesa-San-Lorenzo.jpg 785w, https:\/\/blog.residenceliguria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Chiesa-San-Lorenzo-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.residenceliguria.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Chiesa-San-Lorenzo-768x399.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 785px) 100vw, 785px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"spazio30\"><\/div>\n<p>By the sea the most attractive part of the whole <strong>Path of the Pilgrim<\/strong> is waiting for us. While climbing we find a<strong> special wall decorated with a beautiful bright combination of colors<\/strong> and nautical-themed decorations. It is called the Torre delle Streghe (<strong>Witches\u2019Tower<\/strong>), erected in 1582 to mark the borders between the territories of <strong>Noli and Varigotti<\/strong>. Even Dante Alighieri walked along this part of the trail \u201c<strong>Dantesque Walk<\/strong>\u201d, as it is called: in fact, the great Italian poet cites this itinerary in Purgatory IV Canto.<br \/>\nBy retracing his immortal steps, we walk down to Noli under <strong>oaks and maritime pines<\/strong> shadow as far as we take a new deviation.<br \/>\nThe path is now quite descending and along the way here and there branches of trees and bushes reach the walk.<br \/>\nTen minutes later we arrive at one of the most natural wonders in Liguria: The Counterfeits\u2019 Cave.<\/p>\n<div class=\"spazio30\"><\/div>\n<h3>The Counterfeits\u2019 Cave<\/h3>\n<div class=\"spazio30\"><\/div>\n<p>Also known as \u201cAntro dei Briganti\u201d (<strong>Brigands\u2019 hiding place<\/strong>) it is an enormous opening cut in the rock, a <strong>real window overlooking the sea<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe story (hence the name) tells that pirates and brigands used to take shelter and hide their treasures here.<br \/>\nWe can\u2019t resist the temptation to <strong>come into the cave<\/strong> and to do that we must cross a <strong>very narrow passage<\/strong>, barely large enough for human exploration.<br \/>\nOn the other side the view in front of us is really magnificent: we are into the cave dropping suddenly in the sea. We start going down again and after a while we get to the last important place of the itinerary: the scenic remains of the <strong>Church of S. Giulia and S.
